Maldives Denounces Israeli Settlers' Al-Aqsa Storming
In an official statement, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry declared: "The Government of the Republic of Maldives strongly condemns the continued incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli extremist settlers and the raising of the Israeli flag within its compound, under the protection of Israeli Occupation forces."
The ministry went further, stating: "Such actions, along with the restrictions on worshippers' access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque constitute a blatant violation of international law and represent a deliberate provocation aimed at undermining the sanctity, legal status, and deeply rooted historical and religious significance of Al-Aqsa Mosque."
Malé is now pressing the international community to act swiftly, demanding accountability for what it described as Israel's ongoing "gross human rights violations and its blatant disregard" for the longstanding status quo that governs one of Islam's most sacred sites. The ministry simultaneously reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and urged immediate global intervention to safeguard Islamic holy sites and uphold Palestinian rights.
The diplomatic rebuke follows Sunday's incident, in which Israeli settlers — shielded by police — forced their way into Al-Aqsa, hoisted Israeli flags across its courtyards, and conducted rituals widely viewed as deliberately provocative.
The intrusions are not isolated. Since 2003, Israeli police have unilaterally permitted settlers to enter the mosque daily during two designated windows — morning and afternoon — with exceptions on Fridays and Saturdays.
Palestinian officials warn that Israel is systematically accelerating efforts to alter the identity of East Jerusalem, targeting Al-Aqsa as part of a broader campaign to erase its Arab and Islamic character. Palestinians consider East Jerusalem the capital of their future state, a position anchored in international resolutions that reject both Israel's 1967 occupation and its 1980 annexation of the city.
